Dear Friends,

Last week we discussed the issue of abortion as the greatest moral divide in our nation in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. We talked about what was at stake regarding abortion in the midterm elections and what the consequences of the outcomes might be.

THE DISTRESSING RESULTS IN FIVE KEY STATES

Voters in five states voted directly on the issue of abortion, and tragically abortion prevailed in each of those states. Voters in California, Vermont and Michigan resoundingly supported amendments enshrining extreme abortion rights in their state constitutions. In overwhelmingly pro-life Kentucky, voters shockingly rejected a pro-life constitutional amendment. Particularly disturbing is the outcome in Montana where voters did not adopt a measure to protect infants born alive after an attempted abortion and entitle them to medically appropriate care and treatment. Lord, hear our prayers.

DR. DENISON: “THE FRAGILITY AND URGENCY OF LIFE”

Council for Life Advisory Board member Dr. Jim Denison devoted this past Tuesday’s Denison Forum – The Daily Article to the midterm abortion vote’s disheartening revelation about the “deeply urgent” condition of our culture.

Dr. Denison reminds us that the outcome further indicates our world is “increasingly antagonistic to biblical moral values.” He makes a powerful case about how “protecting the most fragile of our fellow humans become your job and mine.” Dr. Denison sets forth a call to action challenging us with three responses we all as Christians should heed:

I. THE LOGICAL FIRST RESPONSE

Unborn humans are humans. Science shows us the irrefutable humanity of the child in the womb. He asks why we would not confer the same legal protection to an unborn baby that we provide to a baby the minute that baby is born— simply changing location to outside its mother’s womb. “Making the case that pre-born children are children is foundational to saving their lives from abortion.”

II. THE PRACTICAL SECOND RESPONSE

Pregnant women deserve all the support they need. He points out that every reason women frequently cite for choosing to abort their baby can be overcome by connecting them with the vital resources they desperately need. “From financial support (the #1 cause of abortion) to counseling and medical resources, churches and ministries can help mothers choose life.”

We have an abundance of resources in our community. The DFW area is one of the most philanthropic in the nation. Individuals, corporations, nonprofits and churches must all do their part.

III. THE SPIRITUAL THIRD RESPONSE

Our culture is being deceived. Dr. Denison highlights how many individuals claim to not personally believe in abortion, but feel uncomfortable imposing their views on others. He notes the hypocrisy of how in every other aspect of our society, laws are enacted and therefore we “force our beliefs” on others. “But when innocent, defenseless pre-born humans are at risk, we decide we cannot ‘force our beliefs’ on those who would take their lives.”

WE ARE ON THE FRONT LINES

Council for Life often refers to our outstanding Beneficiaries doing life-saving work as the heroes on the “front lines.” But Dr. Denison asserts that in this post-Roe environment, the fight for life has shifted to one that requires each of us to be on the front lines.

“We need to make the logical case for life wherever we can. We need to support ministries that support pregnant women considering abortion. And we need to pray daily for a spiritual awakening that would expose the darkness of deception to the light of truth.”

Council for Life is so thankful to Dr. Denison for his clear articulation of a biblical worldview with regard to the issue of abortion. We are filled with gratitude for his bold, unwavering leadership and example on the sanctity of human life. Thank you, Dr. Denison, for posing to each of us the question of what we will do to reverse this “tragic trajectory” and providing us wise direction on how we can help.

“Millions of unborn lives are in the balance” indeed.
