“My charge to you, and to myself, is to live and fight for somebody else, somebody that could never pay you back, but someone and a group of people who matter because their lives matter to God.”
Council for Life welcomed Benjamin Watson, former NFL tight end, author, speaker and advocate for the unborn, to speak at the CFL Men’s Breakfast at the Dallas Country Club on May 19.
After sharing some recent statistics on abortion in America, Ben stressed the urgency we face today on the Life issue and the important role that manhood plays.
“We can’t have urgency if we don’t understand the magnitude of the problem. Gentlemen, I believe we are facing a problem that only we can fix. Manhood is important and the data would tell you that men are the ones who lead society when it comes to societal ills and poor outcomes.
So, what’s the game plan?
‘Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly.’ It comes from the verse Micah 6:8.
I suggest to you that this is our game plan when it comes to attacking, and having the urgency to fight in this most important movement for life.”
During the Q&A following his talk, Ben was asked where the needle is moving the most in the pro-life movement across the country. His answer was such an encouragement to Council for Life:
“To be honest with you, I have never seen anything like this [breakfast]. This is incredible. You rarely see groups of men gathered together for the sole purpose of supporting an organization like Council for Life, or on the issue or topic of abortion. There are plenty of men who have been speaking on this, have supported or advocated, whether they be in politics or in philanthropy, but I haven’t seen a large groundswell of men like this that understand the importance of it.”
We Have To Reject Passivity Across The Board
Benjamin inspired men to reject passivity, the same way Adam was passive in the garden with Eve.
“Lord, why am I passive sometimes? Because I’m his son, Adam, and so that’s why I’m passive. And that’s why a man thought of ‘my body, my choice’. It gives us cover…an excuse not to deal with the consequences of our actions…there’s a lot of issues where men are passive. And we see the negative outcomes where men are passive and so how do we deal with it? That’s a good question. I don’t know because we’ve been fighting this battle since the beginning. But what I do know is, when men demonstrate what it means to lead intentionally, to step into responsibility, even when it’s tough, others see that example and they see that they can do it too.”
