From sex education to social media algorithms, today’s youth are being formed by powerful cultural forces, often in ways that surprise parents and ministry leaders.
At the Council for Life Life Lessons Box Lunch, our expert panelists unpacked the Influences Shaping Gen Z and Gen A Attitudes on Sex, Contraceptives and Abortion. They addressed what today’s youth are hearing, why these narratives are so influential and how they affect attitudes toward relationships, pregnancy and human dignity.

The panel opened with a discussion on the cultural forces shaping young people’s views on sex, contraception, and abortion.
Lori described today’s “sex-saturated culture,” driven by peers and social media, and emphasized the need to equip youth with truth. Dr. Johnston noted that many children now turn to the internet and AI instead of parents for guidance. Dr. Kirby stressed that while technology is unavoidable, parents and the church must actively guide young people. Dan added that students are absorbing cultural “scripts” that often prioritize career over marriage and shape their views on sexuality.
Sex Education in Texas Schools
Lori highlighted that while Texas has strong sex education standards, there is little accountability for schools that don’t follow them. She contrasted Sexual Risk Avoidance with more controversial approaches not permitted in Texas but still present in some districts.
Dr. Kirby shared that private schools like Jesuit teach these topics through morality and justice. At Prestonwood Christian Academy, Dr. Johnston emphasized a Scripture-based approach that partners with parents and reinforces the value of life.
Influence of Entertainment, Technology, and Relationships
The panel discussed how media, technology, and relationships impact youth. Dr. Kirby warned that algorithms reinforce narrow worldviews, making parental guidance essential. Dr. Johnston emphasized setting boundaries, noting improved engagement after limiting phone use at school.
Dan highlighted the importance of connection, encouraging early conversations and regular device-free family meals to combat isolation and build strong relationships.
Lori shared that while teen pregnancy and sexual activity rates have declined, concerns remain, including rising STD rates and increased use of chemical abortion. Dan noted that positive trends often reverse in college.
Dr. Johnston and Dr. Kirby addressed the prevalence of pornography and sexting, often beginning unintentionally. The panel emphasized the importance of parental guidance, clear boundaries, and equipping students to respond when exposed to harmful content.
The panel closed by focusing on how to reshape students’ understanding of these issues. Dr. Kirby emphasized teaching young men truth, love, and respect for the human body. Dr. Johnston underscored that all people are made in God’s image, forming the foundation for understanding sex and family.
Lori encouraged parents to “reflect, connect, and direct,” starting conversations at home. The panelists urged parents to stay engaged, ask questions, and lead with honesty—using even their own past experiences to build trust and guide their children.
