But we grieve the reality of abortion in our post-Roe America.
The number of abortions in our nation is at an unprecedented high. Most of these babies die from chemical abortion pills.
Lord have mercy.
U.S. Number of Babies Born Going Down v. Babies Killed by Abortion Hitting Record Highs
U.S. Birthrate fell in 2025 to a record low continuing two decades of decline.
Data released last week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evidences the fertility rate — the number of births per 1,000 women of childbearing age — dropped to a record low of 3.6 million. As reported by The New York Times, for the first time in our country’s history, nearly 50% of 30-year-old women are childless, compared to only 18% 50 years ago.
Meanwhile, in glaring contrast, the number of babies killed in abortions has tragically hit record highs.
The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute as well as Planned Parenthood recently released their 2025 abortion data. The Guttmacher Institute is a research and policy organization “committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide.”
Planned Parenthood touts 434,450 abortions in the “Health Care Service Numbers” section of its 2024-2025 Annual Report entitled “Care continues.”
The Guttmacher Monthly Abortion Provision Study reports 1.126 million “clinician-provided” abortions in the United States in 2025. Planned Parenthood gloatingly reports that it performed 434,450 abortions in its 2024-2025 Annual Report.
Let those numbers sink in— 3,085 precious little souls are lost to abortion every day in our country and Planned Parenthood accounts for nearly half of their deaths.
“Clinician-provided” abortions per Guttmacher include both surgical and, for the first time, chemical abortions provided through telehealth to residents of Texas and other states with abortion bans.
A “telehealth” abortion means abortion pills are mailed after an online video call with a “clinician” who is a licensed U.S. health professional like a Doctor, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
Guttmacher’s Study Shows “Major Shifts” for Women Living in Pro-Life States like Texas:
- Fewer women are traveling out of state for a surgical abortion, and more are choosing chemical abortion via telehealth.
- Chemical abortions provided by telehealth increased from 74,000 in 2024 to 91,000 in 2025, representing a staggering 23% increase.
- Women further along in their pregnancy are still traveling across state lines to receive a surgical abortion.
Disturbingly, Guttmacher readily acknowledges that the 1.126 million abortions they report is actually higher.
Guttmacher does not include the many “non-clinician” chemical abortions occurring by pills sourced from pro-abortion community networks or international or domestic websites that do not require direct interaction with or a prescription from a licensed U.S. health professional.
Pro-Life Leaders Doing Everything Possible to Protect Babies and Women from Chemical Abortion
Since the overturn of Roe, Council for Life has been educating about the valiant efforts of pro-life leaders to protect babies and women from chemical abortion, including defunding Planned Parenthood and aggressively pressing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to restrict or remove access to chemical abortion pills. Last month, Senator Josh Hawley introduced a new bill, the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act. His proposal would ban abortion pills nationwide and allow women harmed by the pills to bring legal action against the drug manufacturers.
On April 2, Senator Hawley sent a Letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.. Senator Hawley expressed his “alarm” after the March 31 breaking news confirming the Trump administration would release another year of Title X grant funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, urging the HHS Secretary to “reverse course.” (See EWTN News article HERE)
State of Louisiana v. FDA
A major federal abortion case to follow is the State of Louisiana v. FDA. Louisiana, together with attorneys from Alliance Defending Freedom, filed the lawsuit last October in the U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana, Lafayette Division. Louisiana alleges the FDA’s 2023 permanent removal of the in-person dispensing requirement for the chemical abortion drug mifepristone has enabled abortion doctors and activists to illegally mail the dangerous drugs into Louisiana and other pro-life states.
Louisiana resident Rosalie Markezich bravely joined Louisiana as a plaintiff. In 2023, Rosalie was coerced by her then boyfriend to take abortion drugs that he obtained in the mail from a California abortion doctor.
In February, Federal Judge David C. Joseph heard arguments in the case. An overwhelming 21 states, 60 members of the U.S. Congress and 58 pro-life organizations and advocates filed friend-of-the-court briefs in support of Louisiana and Rosalie.
Last week in a Memorandum Ruling, Judge Joseph paused the lawsuit, granting a six-month hold while the FDA completes an ongoing internal safety review of mifepristone. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has appealed to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, seeking to overturn the pause and force faster action against the FDA.
Legal experts and observers anticipate the case is likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
